Do you want to get excited when you think about putting the placenta on your face? Then you may want to look away. Due to the abundance of stem cell rejuvenation, it is becoming an increasingly popular therapeutic ingredient after childbirth.
Hollywood stars January Jones and Alicia Silverstone, who became a hot topic in 2011 for taking placenta pills to regain postnatal energy, are now focused on anti-aging.
In Los Angeles, A-listers doctor Harold Lancer is known as the man behind the Placenta Facial, beloved by Victoria Beckham. A beauty essence made from sheep placenta is applied to the skin. And you will find placenta appearing in more and more high-end anti-wrinkle creams.
The placenta is usually sourced from sheep, pigs, cows and deer and is used in Asia for its rapid skin healing power and is being studied in the medical community to help slow-healing wounds in diabetics.

The placenta is rich in proteins, enzymes and growth factors from stem cells. When properly treated, it can improve the skin, “says Dr. Sophie Shotter, who has shown excellent results in using Calecim Professional Placenta Serum to reduce downtime after clinical facials. “Studies have shown that placental protein has anti-aging benefits,” she adds.
It is important to see how the placenta contained in the cream is procured and processed. Dr. Maryam Zamani, whose client is Elle Macpherson, clearly states the sheep placenta in two anti-aging creams, but tells her that the placenta is ethically sourced from a rural sheep farm in New Zealand. I was only given when I emailed, collecting the placenta after the animal gave birth.
You may be stunned by the idea of putting a postpartum on your face, but living placental cells do not make it the final cream. Cells are frozen, heat-treated, or cultured to release a cocktail rich in proteins, growth factors, and amino acids called “placental proteins.”
“Placental proteins contain reactive oxygen species, vitamins, and antioxidants that stimulate the regeneration of skin cells and slow down the aging process,” says Dr. Zamani. Strict safety and ethical checks mean that a good placenta cream will be overpriced, says Dr. Shotter.

New Zealand sheep eye gel
Nature’s Beauty Ovine Placenta Eye Gel, £ 12.95, kiwisheepskins.com
Victoria said Nature’s Beauty Ovine Placenta Eyegel (pictured) is not worth the £ 11 shipping from New Zealand
what is that? Cooled cucumber and manuka honey gel containing sheep placenta protein.
What is it like? It may seem cheap, but shipping from New Zealand required £ 11 in addition to the order. The country has high standards of animal welfare and the placenta is organic, but I wasn’t sure enough to complete the pot.
verdict: Not worth the shipping. 2/5
Egg scented wrinkle buster
MZ Skin Replenishment and Restoration by Dr. Maryam Zamani, £ 255, mzskin.com
According to Victoria, Dr. Maryam Zamani’s MZ skin replenishment and restoration (pictured) is a proven physician’s prescription and proven.
what is that?? An overnight recovery mask containing 5% placenta protein solution (from sheep) and 2% asparagus stem cell-derived plant placenta, and peptides and hyaluronic acid.
What is it like? This silky smooth mask made my dry skin feel plump overnight.
Dr. Zamani likes to minimize the additional scent, so the active ingredient has a slight egg-like odor. I like the product itself being tried to show that wrinkle depth is reduced by up to 14.4% after a month of night use.
verdict: I tried and tested a proven doctor’s prescription.4/5
Lab to feed potions after childbirth
Sara Chapman London Skinesis Comfort Cream D-Stress, £ 66, Sara Chapman.com
Victoria said Sarachapman London Skinesis Comfort Cream D-Stress (pictured) is a modern stress-relieving cream
what is that? A nutritional recovery cream containing bioplacenta, a mixture of synthetic growth factors made in the lab to soothe sensitive skin and increase elasticity.
What is it like? It also acts as a pollution shield that soothes and fluffs menopausal skin and traps moisture with ceramide. We use “Bio Placenta”, that is, placenta made in the lab.
It does not have animal placental protein, but it is a complex of similar growth factors with anti-wrinkle properties.
verdict: A cream that relieves modern stress.4/5
Dear deer umbilical cord
Calecim Professional Multi-Action Cream, £ 61 for 20g, calecimprofessional.com
Victoria said Calesim Professional Multi-Action Cream (pictured) had remarkable results in improving skin tone.
what is that? A high-class anti-aging lifting cream that uses the umbilical cord lining of red deer, which has more stem cells than placenta. Usually only available at the clinic, but can also be purchased directly from the supplier.
What is it like? Targeting sagging skin and showing remarkable results in improving tone, eyebags and chin after 4 weeks in an independent study, this cream is one of the most rigorously tested for safety and efficacy. ..
verdict: This works. 4/5
A little flashy beauty boost claim
Skin Inc Beauty Jelly Dose, £ 21.60, feelunique.com
Victoria managed only a sip of Skin Inc Beauty Jelly Dose (pictured) before pouring it into the sink.
what is that? A pouch of jelly infused with marine placenta for “detox, glow, lift”.
What is it like? I managed just a bite of this sick peach goo before pouring it into the sink. The doctor I spoke to did not mention the fish placenta as a source of anti-aging protein. There is no evidence that eating fish placenta gives a detoxifying glow.
In addition to a small amount of marine collagen from fish scales, it contains apple cider vinegar (for metabolism), vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid to support skin hydration and collagen production.
verdict: Stir the stomach. 0/5
Anti-ager with high price tag
Skin Chemist London Placenta Moisturizer, £ 110, skinchemists.com
Victoria said the Skin Chemist London Placenta Moisturizer (pictured) is an expensive, low-information package.
what is that? A moisturizing cream for mature skin that contains placental protein to “reduce the visible signs of aging.”
What is it like? The first ingredients are water and glycerin, followed by coconut oil. This is a cheap substance that does not seem to justify a huge price tag.
Is placental protein special? This artificially scented cream didn’t stimulate self-confidence because the packaging and website didn’t have details about how much it was contained or where it came from.
verdict: High price for packages with little information. 1/5
