DirecTV has dropped Newsmax, a right-wing television network, from its line-up. This is his second conservative news network to be discontinued by the company. One America News reports that in April 2022 he will be deplatformed by DirecTV.

The satellite company claimed to have canceled Newsmax because of the high fees the conservative company was charging.

“We have made it clear to Newsmax on numerous occasions that we would like to continue to offer our network, but ultimately, Newsmax’s request for rate increases will result in significantly higher costs that we will have to pass on to our broader customer base. A DirecTV representative said:

However, Newsmax doesn’t believe that’s the real reason it was released by DirecTV.

Newsmax, the nation’s fourth-most-watched cable news channel, said claims that both DirecTV’s channel and One America News were removed as a “cost-cutting measure” were false. Newsmax was only asking for $1 per cable subscriber per year. That’s a significantly lower price point compared to the liberal news outlets that the company broadcasts. DirecTV pays MSNBC $8 and CNN about $12 per cable subscriber. Most of the 22 liberal news channels they offer make more money than Newsmax, even those with far lower ratings.

Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy called the cancellation “a blatant act of political discrimination and censorship against Newsmax.”

Conservative leaders are furious about censorship. 45th President Donald J. Trump shared his feelings on Truth Social.

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R, Ark) said right-wing networks didn’t have a fair chance.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has encouraged conservatives to call satellite providers and demand that the company end conservative censorship.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) called the cancellation an “unprecedented attack on free speech.”

A number of members of Congress, including Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), gathered to address AT&T, DirectTV, and TPG executives: “We are deeply concerned about this undemocratic attack. I wrote a letter saying, about free speech. ”

In the past, a powerful Washington politician wrote to DirecTV demanding censorship of conservatives.

In February 2021, before both OAN and Newsmax were canceled, Congressmen Anna Eshu (D-California) and Jah McNerney (D-California) wrote a letter to DirecTV encouraging censorship of conservative media. sent to

At the time, the two representatives served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Communications and Technology Subcommittee. In their letter, they alluded to the right-wing media being full of disinformation and half-truths.

The final question in their letter was, “Are you planning to continue broadcasting Fox News, Newsmax and OANN on U-Verse, DirecTV and AT&T TV now and beyond your renewal date?” If so, why? ”

The move to deplatform Newsmax affects many. According to Nielsen ratings, Newsmax is the top 16 daytime channel among all cable his channels, watched by 25 million Americans.
