1,000-pound meteor hits Texas

HIdalgo County, Texas (ValleyCentral) — NASA has confirmed reports that a meteor struck near McAllen on Wednesday, with data showing it reached the ground.

According to a statement NASA sent to ValleyCentral, the meteor was believed to be two feet in diameter and weigh about 1,000 pounds.

“Radar and other data indicate that a meteorite reached the ground from this event,” NASA said.

According to the statement, meteorites tend to hit the Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, but slow down and break into small pieces without any general risk to the masses.

There are currently no reports of injuries or property damage, according to NASA and other local authorities.

NASA said the meteor seen over McAllen on Wednesday is a reminder to better understand and protect our planet.

Additionally, NASA advises contacting the Smithsonian Institution if an individual believes he or she has discovered meteorite fragments.

“When samples such as the remnants of this event are collected and studied, they will enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the solar system and our region’s natural space debris environment,” NASA said.
