Deputy sheriff, dozens in attendance injured during Jeep Weekend event in Galveston County, officials say

Galveston County, Texas – The Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured and transported after an accident early Sunday during the Jeep Weekend event in Crystal Beach.

According to a report from the KSAT’s sister station, KPRC, a vehicle collided with the MP around 1:30 a.m. and nearly sent him through the windshield.

The deputy was transported from the crash site to a district hospital with two broken legs, a broken arm and head injuries, Sheriff Henry Trucheset confirmed to the KPRC. The MP is expected to be operated on.

The KPRC reported that at least 38 people were sent to hospital during the event, including eight by helicopter.

Officials confirmed to the KPRC that there were nearly 80,000 people attending the Jeep Weekend. This is an increase in recent years and is burdening law enforcement and emergency services, Galveston County’s ESD 2 said on social media.

“Currently, this large influx of crowds is burdening the emergency services on the Bolivar Peninsula,” GCESD 2 said.

With the influx of attendees, more first aid services and law enforcement agencies were called in to help.

KPRC reports that many Jeep Weekend visitors have waited in traffic for at least three hours to board a ferry between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
