Oklahoma City – White Republicans in southeastern Oklahoma face criticism for comparing their efforts to end abortion with the fight against slavery.
Roland’s Rep. Jim Olsen commented Wednesday at a meeting of the House Public Health Commission considering an anti-abortion bill.
According to KOCO-TV, when asked to clarify the comments, Sister Olsen said, “None of us want to be slaves.” .. When your life is gone, it’s gone. “
The House of Representatives Democrats immediately denounced Olsen’s comments, and Parties urged Olsen to formally blame. A spokesman for House Speaker Charles McCall did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Olsen would face disciplinary action.
“Today, I’ve heard claims that the fight for abortion is greater than hundreds of years when African Americans were kidnapped and enslaved, out of control of their bodies and families, and not recognized as humans,” said Dennis Brewer. , D-Tulsa. “These insensitive ideas are still alive in our Capitol.”
Olsen said Thursday he would support his comment.
“I have made a very historically relevant analogy. I have never spoken positively about slavery,” said Olsen.
Last month, another Republican apologized after explaining a black baby using racist terms during a debate over another abortion bill in the House of Representatives.
Olsen’s bill would make it a felony to have an abortion in Oklahoma. However, up to 10 years’ imprisonment can be imposed, except to save the life of a pregnant woman. The Commission has approved the bill and is now heading to the House of Representatives for final consideration. This is one of several anti-abortion bills heading to the governor’s desk.
