THE ANGELS – Comedian Dave Chappelle was approached during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night and a man was later arrested.
Security guards chased and dominated the attacker, and Chappelle was able to continue his action while the man was taken in an ambulance.
The assailant was carrying a replica weapon with a knife blade inside, authorities said.
Isaiah Lee, 23, was arrested and arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, said Officer Alba Mendez, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
Lee was treated by medical staff for an unspecified injury and was taken to jail Wednesday morning and detained in lieu of a $ 30,000 bail, Mendez said. It was not immediately known if he had hired a lawyer.
Mendez said a “famous comedian was acting” when Lee jumped on stage, approached the celebrity and produced the replica of the gun containing a knife blade. Mendez said the department did not name the celebrity because it does not confirm the names of the victims.
Chappelle was performing her stand-up routine on the last of the four nights in the amphitheater as part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival when the man took the stage and confronted her. Jamie Foxx was in the sidelines and Chappelle thanked him for his response to the attack. Chris Rock was there too. He picked up the microphone and jokingly asked, “Was that Will Smith?”
“Chappelle’s performances at the Hollywood Bowl were epic and broke records and she refuses to allow last night’s incident to eclipse the magic of this historic moment,” Chapelle publicist Carla Sims said in a statement. “As unfortunate and disturbing as the incident was. Chappelle continued with the program.”
Chappelle was attacked when he ended a routine in which he talked about how comedians have to worry more about their personal safety following this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, in which the Oscar-winning actor slapped Rock on live television as reaction to a joke. about his wife.
“The comedian had just literally said that he now has more security because of all the fuss about his jokes about the trans community,” Buzzfeed News journalist Brianna Sacks, who attended the show, wrote on Twitter.
After resuming, Chappelle joked that “he was a trans man.”
A police statement at noon reported the incident but gave no indication as to whether investigators had determined the motive for the attack.
“We are very concerned about the safety of the creators and strongly support the right of comedians to act on stage without fear of violence,” a Netflix statement said.
