Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones compares rookie OL to Larry Allen

Jerry Jones said he was very pleased with Smith’s strength, which reminds him of another member of the Cowboys Hall of Fame.

DALLAS – Dallas Cowboys rookie offensive lineman Tyler Smith is from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, attended North Crowley High School before playing Division I ball in Tulsa.

And now, before taking a single touchdown with the Cowboys uniform, the Tulsa first-round pick is making comparisons to a legend of the American team: Larry Allen.

Of course, it doesn’t help that Smith has been assigned the number 73, which Allen used for the Cowboys throughout his career, but comments from owner Jerry Jones are taking the headlines to the rookie. Jones said Smith’s physical strength is reminiscent of Allen.

“Not as a player, I don’t say that,” Jones said when comparing Smith to Allen. “But it’s strong. We’re happy.”

Even Jones ’simple comparison of strength is revealing. You’re talking about one of the strongest players the NFL has ever seen.

Allen famously recorded a 705-pound bench press and a 905-pound squat. In the 2006 NFL Pro Bowl strongest man competition, Allen threw 225 pounds 43 times.

Smith was just four years old when Allen played his last game for the Star, six years old when Allen retired, and 12 when Allen was inducted into the Hall of Fame. But Smith is still well aware of Allen’s legacy for the Cowboys.

“I’m a younger guy, so Larry Allen is ahead of my time, but I understood (how good Allen was),” Smith told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Larry Allen wore that number, and I saw a lot of the adversity he went through at the beginning of his life, and I feel like I resonate a lot with that. It means a lot to be able to carry that and continue that legacy.”

Smith is expected to comb for representatives on the Dallas left guard during his rookie season.

“I really want to be the best at what I do. I put everything I have into what I do,” Smith said in April when he was selected. “This is a blessing beyond my imagination, and I know there’s more to do. I know there’s more to me.”

Using the number 73, there are some great shoes to fill, and Allen’s comparisons certainly won’t stop here.

The Cowboys begin their 2022 season against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers on Sunday, September 11th. Here’s a look at the full 2022 calendar.
