Sport plays a huge role in Texas culture. There is no getting away from the fact that Texans are extremely passionate about the sports that are played within the state and the teams that represent them.
There are a number of different professional sports teams that are situated within the state, with many of them known on a global scale because of what they have managed to achieve in their respective disciplines, whilst many others are certainly known nationally and have a fanbase all over the place.
These Texan sports teams, though, are perhaps the most popular:
Anyone who knows anything about the National Football League will know about the Dallas Cowboys. Dubbed “America’s Team” due to the support they have, the Cowboys have been highly successful throughout the history of the NFL and are one of the most accomplished teams to have ever competed.
For instance, the Dallas Cowboys have been able to reach a total of eight Super Bowls and win five of those games, making them tied for second with the most wins ever (alongside Californian franchise, San Francisco 49ers). Indeed, their history in the competition makes them a betting favourite for many to win the Super Bowl each year, with Unibet Indiana providing punters with odds of +2800 for the upcoming season to win a sixth.
The team have had a number of franchise players over the years, with Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman and Tony Romo amongst the most famous quarterbacks to have represented the team, whilst Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Tony Dorsett, Jason Witten, Deion Sanders, Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot are amongst many of the other stellar names to have played for “America’s Team”.
Perhaps in the shadow of the Dallas Cowboys in regards to the NFL, the Houston Texans are still a well-supported franchise and one of the top professional sports teams from the southern state.
The team is relatively new compared to many of the other franchises that can be found competing in the NFL, though, with the Texans having been formed in 2002.
The Texans are undergoing a bit of a transition at the moment on the field, with one of their greatest players ever, J.J. Watt, having recently left for the Arizona Cardinals whilst Deshaun Watson has a number of off-field issues and looks unlikely to be at the franchise much longer.
Houston Astros & Texas Rangers
The state of Texas has a huge baseball presence that can be felt, as there are two well-established Major League Baseball sides competing in the league and have done so for a number of decades.
The first Texas-based franchise was the Houston Astros, who were founded in 1962 and have won the World Series Title on one occasion, as recently as 2017. The Texas Rangers arrived a decade later after deciding to relocate to Arlington from Washington, D.C.
Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets & Dallas Wings
Continuing to highlight just how big sport is in Texas, the sport of basketball has three franchises located within the state, with each of them having a rather global fanbase, let alone just inside the state borders.
The National Basketball League sees the Dallas Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets continually compete, with each of the organizations having been able to win NBA Championships in their history.
Statistically, it could be argued that the San Antonio Spurs are the most successful NBA team from the state, as they have five Championships, with players such as Tim Duncan having helped them to all of their titles to arguably make the Spurs one of the greatest teams in the history of the division.
The Dallas Wings are the state’s female basketball franchise and have competed in the WNBA since 2016, thus showing the continued increase in popularity of the sport.
Houston Dynamo, Houston Dash, FC Dallas & Austin FC
Soccer might not be the biggest or the most popular of sports in America, but the fact that Texas is home to four teams would suggest the state has a big following.
The men’s game has three teams, with Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas and Austin FC all playing in Major League Soccer, with the latter of the trio having only just joined as an expansion franchise in 2021. The Houston Dash is the female soccer club for the state and they play their matches in the NWSL.
