Melbourne (Reuters)-Pace bowler Pat Cummins was appointed Friday as the 47th captain of the Australian test team on behalf of Tim Paine, who had risen from last week’s position.

Payne resigned after being investigated and found to have been cleared for a sexually explicit text message sent to a former female colleague four years ago.

The 28-year-old Cummins became captain’s second specialist high-speed bowler, following Ray Lindwall, who led one test with India in the mid-1950s.

“We are honored to accept this role before the massive ash summer,” Cummins said in a statement. “I hope we can provide the same leadership that Tim (Pain) has given to the group in the last few years.

“With Steve (Smith) and me as captains, we are a strong and intimate group with a number of very senior players on this team and some great young talents.”

As Deputy Captain, Cummins is an obvious alternative to Payne, and his appointment will allow a rapid transition with the launch of the Ash series against England within two weeks.

Smith replaced Cummins as deputy captain and returned to formal leadership role after a 12-month ban and a two-year suspension of leadership following the 2018 Newlands ball tampering scandal.

Popular, telegenic and publicly friendly, Cummins has become Australia’s leading paceman in recent seasons and topped the ICC test bowling rankings.

Even before Payne’s embarrassing resignation, a procession of former players and experts approved Cummins as a waiting captain in Australia, even though former skipper Smith wanted to return to that role. ..

“I think Pat Cumins has grown into a more integral part of the team and with his knowledge of the games and experiences he has experienced,” said former Australian wicketkeeper and captain Adam Gilchrist last week. Told to.

Cummins has enough support to rely on the team, but Payne took an indefinite mental health break.

He took over as captain earlier than planned, but served as an apprentice as a skipper in New South Wales at a national one-day tournament.
