Covid infections are on the rise again with outbreaks in the U.S., New York and Washington, DC, and as a result, senior government officials are lowering the virus as the more contagious BA.2 omicron spreads across the country.

BA.2 now accounts for 86% of new cases, almost completely displacing the previous version of omicrons that drove an unprecedented winter rise, according to Covid surveillance data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday. Studies in the United Kingdom and Denmark show that the BA.2 subariant is 30% to 80% more transmissible than the previous omicron, BA.1.

The U.S. reported about 29,000 new infections daily from Sunday, 10 percent more than in the previous two weeks, according to CDC data. However, infections and hospitalizations are still below 90% of the peak of the January omicron rise.

Although infections are on the rise, most counties still have low levels of Covid transmission and hospitalization, which means people living in these areas should not wear masks indoors under the guidance of the CDC Public Health. White House Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anthony Fauci said this week that Covid will continue to circulate in communities in the near future, and will have to make individual decisions about the risk people want to take based on their age and health status.

“What we hope will happen, and I think it will happen, is that you will not see a similar increase in severity in the sense of people in need of hospitalization and death,” Fauci told ABC’s “This Week.” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said there is a high level of immunity in vaccines and previous infections in the U.S. population to provide protection against BA.2.

Sub-variant BA.2 is even more prevalent in the Northeast, where it is making a significant appearance. BA.2 Represents 92% of new cases in the region, including New York and New Jersey, according to CDC data. New York City reported an average of about 1,887 new infections a day on Saturday, up 52% from the last two weeks, according to the city’s health department.

New York Mayor Eric Adams tested positive for the virus on Sunday after waking up with a stream of voices. Adams attended the Gridiron Dinner in Washington, D.C., an annual event that brings together prominent government officials and journalists. The 80 people who attended the dinner, the first since 2019, have tested positive at Covid, including several senior government officials, according to Gridiron Club president Tom DeFrank.

Attorney General Merrick Garland, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Representatives Joaquin Castro and Adam Schiff and Senator Susan Collins tested positive after dinner.

California House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also tested positive for Covid last week, but had no symptoms and did not attend Gridiron Dinner. Pelosi’s positive result was that he was next to President Joe Biden and arrived one day at the bill’s sigh ceremony. Biden, who did not even attend the Gridiron Dinner, gave a negative rating to Covid.

Among White House Cabinet officials and top lawmakers, Washington’s Covid infection rate has risen by 73% in two weeks, although the overall level of transmission remains low compared to the winter rise. BA.2 accounts for 84% of new cases in the Central Atlantic region, which includes the nation’s capital.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, became the first major city in the United States to reinstate its April 18 internal mask mandate. The City Council made the decision after Covid’s case rose more than 50 percent in 10 days, according to Dr. Cheryl Bettigole, the Philadelphia health commissioner. .
