Nearly 100 million people nationwide are eligible to receive Covid booster shots immediately after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approves additional doses of Modana and Johnson & Johnson vaccines on Thursday night.

After a study by the National Institutes of Health showed that mixing and combining vaccines was safe and effective, the agency decided that fully immunized people would boost boosters with doses from different manufacturers. Can be combined. Pfizer and BioNTech boosters were widely approved for use in the United States on September 24th.

Approximately 11.6 million people have already received boosters nationwide, and with the approval of the CDC, tens of millions more can participate. But not everyone is qualified. Based on the first round of shots, the following are allowed in the United States to obtain additional doses:

Pfizer-BioNTech

More than 47 million Pfizer vaccine recipients who received both shots at least six months ago qualified as boosters on Friday, according to data presented Thursday before the CDC Advisory Board. This includes:

  • Those over 65 years old.
  • All adults aged 18-64 years with cancer, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, and other medical conditions that increase the likelihood of Covid complications.
  • People over the age of 18 who live or work in long-term care facilities, homeless shelters, prisons, or other collective facilities.
  • Frontline employees over the age of 18 who are at high risk of being infected with Covid for work, such as first responders, teachers, supermarket staff, and public transport employees.

Modana

According to a CDC presentation, more than 39.1 million Moderna vaccine recipients who received both shots at least six months ago were boosted on Friday. The CDC has adopted the same criteria as Pfizer for Moderna’s recipients because the two companies use the same mRNA technology in their Covid vaccine. Include them.

Johnson & Johnson

The CDC has adopted slightly different criteria for J & J’s one-shot Covid vaccine, with approximately 13 million recipients eligible as of Friday. It is included

  • All adults who received J & J’s Covid vaccine at least 2 months ago, rather than 6 months for Pfizer and Moderna.
  • All adult J & J recipients are eligible for boosters, even if they have no underlying illness, work in a profession, or live in a location at high risk for Covid.
