CHICAGO – Willson Contreras had three hits and stole a base in his first game against younger brother William, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Saturday.
Chicago won a day after finishing its streak of 10 straight losses and also stopping the Bravos’ 14-game winning streak.
The two Contreras brothers started as receivers, being the first time they shared field. They hugged before Willson, 30, twice All-Star, made a single at the first inning. Contreras then stole second base against his brother and scored on a two-run single by Jonathan Villar.
Willson Contreras later doubled and launched a run. His 24-year-old brother had two hits for the Braves.
William Contreras made a single in the next inning, but was forced out in the second in an unusual double game. Duvall hit a low-flying flyball that fell between three outfielders: Contreras was sent off in the second and Duvall, who had headed back to the dugout before being pushed to base by first baseman coach Eric Young Sr., was sent off.
Justin Steele (2-5) got his first win since his season debut on April 9 against Milwaukee. He allowed two runs and five hits in five innings.
Kyle Wright (7-4) conceded five runs and 11 hits, the record of his career in six innings.
Rafael Ortega homered and Alfonso Rivas and Andrelton Simmons had two hits each for the Cubs.
Adam Duvall, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II had a couple of hits for the Braves. Atlanta has not lost a season series against the Cubs since 2017 and needs to win on Sunday to split this year.
The Cubs extended their lead to 3-0 after a throwing error by Acuña to Willson Contreras’ single to right field in the second. They made it 4-0 with a Jason Heyward double that bounced away from Duvall on the left in the third.
Duvall homered to fifth. The Braves lead the National League in home runs but only have one in two games against Chicago.
Austin Riley’s base-loaded sacrifice fly outscored Atlanta 4-2 in the fifth. Heyward caught a glimpse of Marcell Ozuna’s flyball to the right for the third out.
Braves: RHP Jacob Webb was defeated by Triple-A Gwinnett after he was appointed to the job on Thursday.
Cubs: OF Clint Frazier accepted an assignment in Triple-A Iowa after he was appointed to the assignment on June 10th.
Puppies: INF Frank Schwindel (low back strain) entered the 10-day injury list. He came out in the second inning on Friday after running for the first on land. Schwindel suffered a similar injury during spring training that required three days off, director David Ross said. INF Alfonso Rivas was summoned from Iowa to replace Schwindel. … 2B David Bote (left shoulder surgery) resumed his rehabilitation task with Iowa who was arrested due to dizziness.
RHP Ian Anderson (5-3, 4.81 ERA) will start for the Braves against Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-5, 4.95) on Sunday in the series finale.
