He was 84 years old.

His family made the following statement on Facebook: ‘Former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin L. Powell, died this morning due to complications of Covid 19.

“He was completely vaccinated. We thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their compassionate treatment.

“We have lost a notable and affectionate husband, father, grandfather, and great American.”

Powell has survived by his wife, Alma Powell, and three children.

The general was the first black Secretary of State.

He served under several Republican regimes, including Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, and George W. Bush.

He also chaired Bill Clinton’s Joint Chiefs of Staff after being appointed to the post during Bush Sr’s tenure from 1991 to 1993.

To date, Powell is the only black man to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Despite being a lifelong Republican, Powell was turned down in June 2020 by the president’s tendency to insult Trump’s “drifting” from the Constitution and “who dares to oppose him.” He said he was planning to vote for Biden.

He also praised other retired generals who blamed the then president – ​​especially in response to protests raised after the death of George Floyd.

“I think what we’re seeing in the biggest protests I’ve ever seen suggests that the country is wise to this, and we’re already on it. I’m not going to put up with it, “Powell told CNN at the time.

According to his biography, Powell was born to a Jamaican immigrant in New York City and grew up in South Bronx.

He first joined the army as part of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) during college and was a lieutenant in the Army after graduation.
