According to people familiar with the matter, less than 10,000 people use CNN + daily for two weeks since its inception.

People spoke to CNBC on condition of anonymity to discuss non-public data.

CNN + was launched on March 29. The subscription news streaming service, which costs $ 5.99 a month or $ 59.99 a year, became available only on Monday on Roku and still doesn’t work on Android TV. However, a meager audience is questioning the future of the app after the recently completed combination of Discovery and WarnerMedia in Warner Bros. Discovery.

To make sure of this daily number of users, the number of viewers on the CNN cable network fell sharply last year, but still had an average of 773,000 viewers per day.

“We’re still excited to launch and make progress in just two weeks,” a CNN spokesman said.

CNN has sought to make a big sensation with CNN +, attracting talent from competing news outlets such as Casey Hunt of NBC News and Chris Wallace of Fox News. But there is widespread skepticism as to whether there is enough demand to maintain a standalone news streaming service that is dominated by entertainment options in the landscape. For example, Disney + had more than 10 million subscribers on its first day.

CNN has not released the exact number of CNN + subscribers. ESPN + from Disney, which offers sports news in addition to live broadcasts of events, recently reported 21.3 million subscribers. NBCUniversal’s Peacock, which features news programs, reported 24.5 million monthly active accounts in the U.S., more than 9 million of which were paid members. (ESPN + charges $ 6.99 per month, and Peacock offers premium levels starting at $ 4.99 per month.)

CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav does not publicly comment on the long-term future of CNN +. In February, he told CNBC that he needed to see how the app worked before deciding on any next steps.

“I have not received a business review of what CNN + will be and how it will be offered,” Zaslav said at the time.

It is possible, if unlikely, that CNN + will be offered as part of a broader package offering HBO Max and Discovery +, according to people familiar with the matter. Both of these services have millions of subscribers.

Former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Killar has decided to continue launching CNN + two weeks before the company merged with Discovery. Killer left the company last week. In an interview with CNBC, he was optimistic about the number of subscribers, but did not give any figures.

“It is ahead of my expectations in terms of where the subscribers are, the interaction, the receptivity that we get in terms of people’s reaction to CNN + journalists,” said Kilar Julia Burstyn of CNBC. “I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Axios reported that the new management of Warner Bros. Discovery plans to cut hundreds of millions of investment dollars into the service, given concerns about its future. New CNN CEO Chris Licht will join Warner Bros. Discovery on May 1 and will decide how best to proceed, said two of the people.

Disclosure: NBCUniversal is the parent company of CNBC.
