On Friday, the Gansu provincial government in western China punished 27 officials and exempted Lee after his death, but dismissed his deputy, CCTV reported. The other two subordinate officials were detained until further investigation was conducted, and the other two were given administrative sanctions, demotions, warnings, and disadvantages.

A report issued by the state said it found a lack of proper planning for the event and a failure to respond effectively after the weather conditions deteriorated significantly during the race on May 22nd.

The Organizing Committee failed to implement a protocol to manage the race and was found guilty of being “overly formal and bureaucratic,” the report said.
