Dallas Heat Index: Experts explain how it affects your health

Sweating is our body’s way of cooling, but if the sweat doesn’t evaporate due to moisture, our body temperature will continue to rise.

Dallas — at its simplest, heat index This is the temperature your body feels, and it’s a fairly long equation to understand.

On Monday, June 19, the heat index hit 116 degrees in northern Texas, with the National Weather Service (NWS) estimating a peak heat index of 114 degrees on Tuesday.

NWS has provided the following formulas to help calculate the climate phenomenon everyone is talking about.

HI = -42.379 + 2.04901523*T + 10.14333127*RH – .22475541*T*RH – .00683783*T*T – .05481717*RH*RH + .00122874*T*T*RH + .00085282*T*RH * RH – .00000199*T*T*RH*RH

NWS meteorologist Juan Hernandez said the index is essentially what you get when you combine temperature and humidity. The humidity that people in North Texas experience is about 13 to 15 degrees higher than outdoors.

“It’s a complex equation, with relative humidity, temperature, dew point, all the factors considered here,” Hernandez said. “We haven’t seen anything like this since 1980. In fact, June and July 1980 were the last time the heat index reached 116.”

Dr. Craig Crandall of UT Southwestern University specializes in thermophysiology. He prefers to stay in an air-conditioned room. He warns of potentially fatal heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even stroke.

It all comes down to an increase in core body temperature.

“The more water in the air and the higher the humidity, the less effective sweat is at evaporating, and the sweat needs to evaporate to cool the body,” says Crandall.

Sweating is our body’s way of cooling, but if the sweat doesn’t evaporate due to moisture, our body temperature will continue to rise.

Crandall added that headaches are very common on days with a high heat index. Headaches are some of the first signs of dehydration, he says.
