Lauren Boebert, Republican, Colorado; Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican, Georgia; Ralph Norman, RS.C.; Paul Gossard, Republican, Arizona; Troy Neels Rep. (Republican, Texas) was also present. Gates. Two legal experts attended on January 6.th The defendant, two members of the defendant’s family, a journalist, and a witness to the incident in which they colluded that day were present.

During the hearings, Republican congressmen heard testimony from defendants alleging widespread abuse by law enforcement in the Jan. 6 incident.thas well as the treatment of those detained for their involvement.

Jeri Perna was one of the first testimonies I heard. Perna’s nephew, Matthew Perna, committed suicide on January 6 after being convicted of non-violent conduct.th.

Perna claimed her nephew had been arrested for breaking into the parliament building and loitering for 14 minutes, and cried that the aftermath had ruined her professional and personal life. She claimed that the lawyer who was defending her nephew in court also betrayed him.

“From the moment we learned Matt was being sought by the FBI, one betrayal followed another,” Perna said. “He turned himself in. His agent said it would make him feel better. It was a lie. They said a clean sheet would give him an advantage. He didn’t do it. was told that not being in an organized group would help him, which was also a lie, and then told he would likely only get fined, which is also not true. His attorney said he would plead guilty to all charges and that if he made a deal his sentence would be reduced, which was probably the biggest lie.”

Perna told hearing members that Matthew had been informed by prosecutors that he could face an increased sentence for terrorism, with a jail term of several months. Perna’s nephew was found hanged in the garage shortly afterwards. Geri blamed “mental torture” for his nephew’s suicide.

Later in the hearing, Gates and Green discussed the alleged bias of juries in Washington, D.C., making fair trials impossible. Gates also accused the public defenders appointed to represent many defendants of being biased toward their clients.

“One of the things that bothers me is the behavior of some public defenders who were supposed to represent clients,” Gates said. “When public defenders in cases like this post on social media and appear to share biases against their clients, what should Congress know or think? “

Gates ended the hearing by vowing to file a lawsuit and vowing to use his political power as a legislator to investigate allegations of abuse against the defendant.
