Rick Carlisle resigned as coach of the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. This is the second major starting point for this franchise.

Carlyle spent 13 seasons in Dallas, leading Mavericks to the 2011 NBA title. His decision was announced the day after General Manager Donnie Nelson and the team agreed to say goodbye, ending Nelson’s 24-year operation as part of the organization.

“This was my decision,” Carlyle said in a statement issued to ESPN shortly before the team announced that he was leaving.

Dallas will be the seventh team with coaching vacancies to join New Orleans, Washington, Orlando, Indiana, Portland, and Boston, where Carlyle played for the team that won the 1986 NBA title.
