This week, a container slipped off a truck, turned a narrow street, and pancakes a parked car. No one was injured, but local officials say it was an accident where so many trucks were packed into a small area waiting for it to happen.


“This is becoming a safety issue,” said Jacob Haiku, deputy chief of Los Angeles City Council member Joe Buscaino, who represents the working-class region. Haiku said the city would begin issuing citations to companies that weren’t safely stacking containers or trucks were blocking the streets.

As of Tuesday, there were 63 vessels moored at two ports and 96 vessels awaiting docking and unloading, according to the Southern California Marine Exchange, which oversees the passage of port vessels. .. On Monday, the number of vessels waiting to enter the port reached a record 100.

Wilmington resident Sonia Cervantes said her driveway was blocked by a truck as she tried to get to work at 6:30 am. Her entire block is tired of traffic.

Maria Arrieran, who owns the UCTI Trucking Company with her husband Frank, said she was sympathetic to the community, but truck traffic is due to limited container storage.

“This is an ongoing problem. We’re just trying to get these truck drivers in and out,” she said Wednesday. “I’m literally out on the street that guides traffic.”

California Governor Gavin Christopher issued an executive order on Wednesday aimed at mitigating unprocessed portion. He instructed the California state agency to look for state-owned property that could temporarily store goods entering the port. Democratic Party Newsome has asked the state’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to consider potential sites by December 15.

He also ordered the Governor’s Department of Business and Economic Development to investigate other assets that the state does not own, such as privately owned or locally owned parcels, that can also be used for storage. , The review timeline was not shown.


Newsam’s orders are the beginning, Haiku said, but he also urged the governor to allow cities to make it easier to change zoning rules. He said the city had identified several port-owned plots that could be quickly paved and turned into storage without the existing red tape.
