ROCHESTER, NY (AP) – Candy Crush Saga and Words with Friends, video games that have helped keep gamers from having a smartphone, are ready to be included in the World Video Game Hall of Fame, Hall officials told announce a total of 12 finalists.
Also considered for the 2022 class: Assassin’s Creed, Dance Dance Revolution, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Minesweeper, Ms. Pac-Man, NBA Jam, PaRappa the Rapper, Resident Evil, Rogue and Sid Meier’s Civilization. .
The winners will be presented on May 5 after a vote by an international committee and the public.
“This year’s 12 finalists showcase the reach and depth of the video game world,” said Jon-Paul Dyson, director of The Strong Museum’s International Center for Electronic Game History, which also houses the Hall of Fame.
Smartphone games are named alongside “true icons like Ms. Pac-Man,” Dyson said, and industry-changing games like Rogue, which inspired a genre of role-playing games.

Anyone can nominate a game for the World Video Game Hall of Fame, which recognizes electronic games of all kinds: arcade, console, computer, laptop, and mobile. The honorees are those who have influenced the video game industry or popular culture over time.
Fans are invited to vote online for their favorite finalists through March 24 as part of the “Player Choice” vote. The three games that receive the most public votes will form a single ballot and will have other ballots presented by members of the International Selection Advisory Committee, whose members are journalists and academics with knowledge about the history of video games and their role in society.
