Britain’s defense minister says Ukraine’s no-fly zone means war with Russia

The Ukrainian president has asked Western countries to impose a no-fly zone over his country. Experts warn that this will raise the conflict to a new level.

A senior NATO military official has strongly rejected the alliance’s idea of imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine, saying such a move would be a declaration of war with Russia.

As Russian air forces attack ground targets, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has called on the United States and other Western nations to impose a no-fly zone, among other measures.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace vehemently rejected the idea, saying it would “put British fighters directly against Russian fighters,” Politico said.

“NATO will have to declare war on Russia effectively, because you would,” he said.

Retired Marine Colonel Mark Kansian called the no-fly zone a non-starter.

“If the United States or NATO wanted to do that, they would go to war with Russia,” Cancian told MSNBC on Friday. “They will have to send a lot of planes. They will mix with Russian planes. There will be a war between NATO and the United States and Russia. It would be a war.”

Cancian added that this could cross Putin’s red line this week to keep other nations out of the conflict, and many see it as a threat by the Russian leader to use nuclear weapons.

“Whether it’s serious or not, you can argue. But I don’t know if we really want to learn that,” Cancian said.

A Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, said the no-fly zone would be a NATO decision.

Ukraine is not one of the 30 members of NATO.
