Blood banks take advantage of PC GPU demand to attract donors

Austin, Texas — Daniel Carr remembers when he edited the video, exported it before bedtime, woke up and found it still rendered.

“It takes more than 10 hours. Technology has come a long way,” says Kerr.

The 37-year-old has a background in communication and music. Currently, he is a full-time content creator, editing videos for clients, creating music parodies, and streaming video games.

“I was able to write emotional things, but I’m not the only one,” Kerr said. “In today’s world, I just want to make people laugh and forget how terrible the world is, even for three minutes at a time.”

Car’s game station is also his workstation. Everything happens in front of his computer, and due to the amount of work that happens at the same time, Car needs additional power to get the job done.

“I’m currently using the Nvidia GTX 1080,” Kerr said, referring to the graphics processing unit or GPU on his computer.

Carr says it gets the job done and the video is exported much faster. Still, this process leaves his computer untouched for up to an hour, depending on the length of the clip.

GPUs are primarily used to manage and enhance video and graphics performance. Explaining to non-gamers, Kerr says it’s like owning a truck for 2018 and upgrading larger luggage to a new truck that uses faster and less petrol.

“Or upgrade from the Corolla to the Corvette,” Carr said with a laugh.

GPU prices are skyrocketing due to high demand, revival of prices, and a shortage of chips.

“The only way you can get it right now is to pay a huge amount of money to eBay’s Scalper,” Kerr said.

That’s why it was easy for him to donate blood for the chance to get a GPU from We Are Blood.

“It came from one of my colleagues who are interested in games and was told that this item was rare and in high demand,” said Nick Canedo, Vice President of Community Engagement at We Are Blood. Says.

Since the COVID pandemic began, GPUs at retail prices have barely been achieved, but there have been few blood donations in the same time frame.

“Dozens or dozens of blood donations have been cancelled,” Kaned said.

We Are Blood managed to get one of the most popular PC games on the GPU through its network of blood centers. Organizations have once seen the opportunity to attract new donors and persuade regular donors to schedule appointments in exchange for the opportunity to acquire PC hardware.

“This gives us access to the gamer community, young donors and tech community. These are the members we really need right now,” says Canedo. “Traditional blood donations sponsored by tech companies, schools and universities are traditionally out of the sessions that are part of our strongest blood donation host.”

By mid-August, We Are Blood has over 700 entries for GPU promotion. One of them is a car donated on Sunday afternoon, but he knows that even if he doesn’t win, there are no losers when it comes to blood donations. “

“They say that just doing that will save up to three lives, so if I can help, I’ll do that,” Kerr said.

The promotion is open until August 31st. To schedule your donation, please visit If you are interested in participating in the promotion, you will need to state this when you arrive at the scene. According to We Are Blood, this is to avoid giving the GPU to anyone who doesn’t use the hardware at all.
