Biden meets President of Kenya facing Pandora Papers scrutiny

Washington – The White House said President Joe Biden will address the need for “transparency and accountability” in the international and domestic financial systems when meeting with Kenyan leaders on Thursday. President Uhuru Kenyatta has been scrutinized for revealing that he and his family hid millions of dollars in a hidden offshore account.

Kenyatta is one of more than 330 current and former politicians identified as a beneficiary of a secret account revealed in a recent report known as the Pandora Papers. He and his relatives hold about $ 30 million offshore, according to a report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The consortium has obtained millions of leaked documents detailing the hidden wealth of prominent world leaders, politicians, business executives and celebrities. Kenyatta denied cheating.

Biden was expected to address “Elephant in the Room” at a meeting between Kenyatta and senior Kenyan officials at an afternoon meeting in the Oval Office.

White House spokesman Jen Psaki said he has spoken out about what Biden considers to be “inequality” in the international financial system.

“That doesn’t mean you don’t meet people who have disagreements,” Pusaki said. “We have a broad interest in working with Kenya and working with them on issues in Africa and the region, which will be the main focus.”

The White House announced Thursday that the United States will inoculate the African Union 17 million times with Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine. Africa lags behind much of the world in vaccination. Only nine African countries have achieved the World Health Organization’s goal of immunizing at least 10% of the population by the end of September.

Kenyatta’s visit also comes from the nearly year-long war in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, which continues to devastate the region.

The United States hopes to help Kenya, a long-time ally of counterterrorism in East Africa, end the conflict in neighboring Ethiopia, which has left an area plagued by artificial famine. Biden has threatened to impose sanctions on Ethiopian officials and others involved in the conflict if the fighting does not end soon.

Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, a top Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the meeting with his strategic partner was “postponed for a long time.” He urged Biden to use the conference to address internal tensions in some parts of Kenya and the potential impact on next year’s elections.

Mr. Riche is also concerned that Kenya will account for about one-third of its external debt repayment costs from 2021 to 2010 and will build up debt with China, the second largest foreign creditor after the World Bank. Said.

“The Biden administration should bring these issues to the fore and center in discussions with the President of Kenya and other Kenyan officials this week,” said Riche.

This conference will be Biden’s first one-on-one face-to-face involvement as president with African leaders.

The White House said leaders are expected to discuss democracy and human rights issues, as well as security, economic growth and climate change.
