Bexar County Helps Expand Free Mental Wellness Program to More School Districts

San Antonio – It was a call for help from South Sun ISD students over two years ago.

Mark Mendiola said their group began talking about the need for mental health and the lack of resources they had available, and then brought those concerns into the school district.

“It’s hard for us to actually ask for that help,” he says of the youth’s feelings that everyone cares about or listens to. “People in our culture as Hispanic cultures can seem to be weak in being sad or unhappy, and they think it’s just an emotion you control.” He described the stigma in his culture.

The group’s screams were answered and doubled with the help of students from other districts.

The San Antonio Mobile Mental Wellness Collaborative was created with the help of six nonprofits to provide free counseling and wraparound services to South San Antonio, Harlandale and Edgewood ISD.

Partner institutions are the Jewish Family Services in San Antonio, the Family Services Association, the Clarity Child Guidance Center, Rise Recovery, the South Texas Children’s Bereaved Family Center, and the San Antonio School Community.

Last week, the Bexar County Commissioners Court approved $ 4.75 million in five-year funding to increase service to two additional school districts. Once things are confirmed, the Southwest and Somerset districts could become those districts.

Talli Dolge, CEO of the Jewish Family Service, said this is a dream come true as communities and leaders put the mental health of these students at the forefront.

“At this point, this will be part of the mental health check we have overlooked for many years,” she said. COVID-19 took the stigma that prevented some families from talking about their needs she said.

This funding allows each nonprofit to hire an additional full-time staff and obtain other curriculum for school staff.

Evita Morin, CEO of Rise Recovery, said he was grateful that the group worked together during the pandemic to provide the community with the necessary mental support.

“This standard, which expects all of us to experience something, universalizes the need for mental health services and wellness and focuses on wellness. They may not want to admit it. Hmm. All students and families can admit that this was a stressful time for them, so it really normalized the conversation, “Morrin said.

However, she said the movement of school district and county leaders to fund the mental health of young people today would be an investment in their future as unmeasurable adults.

“The cost savings of saving a child’s life, preventing schools from putting the pipeline in jail, and helping the child succeed, prosper, and graduate are immeasurable,” Morin said. It was.
