Bengals coordinator unhappy with Evan McPherson during Super Bowl halftime show

Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson has had a marked year and playoffs, but his coach is still unhappy with him for his Super Bowl performance.

CINCINNATI – It was an iconic moment at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles last month when Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson was shown enjoying the performance of Dr. Dre to rest on the sidelines.

But it turns out that Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons didn’t think so, and he’s still not happy about it almost a month later.

Instead of joining his teammates in the locker room during the big game, McPherson, 22, was off the field watching the performance, giving people quite a laugh.

However, Simmons told Jay Morrison of The Athletic on Thursday, “that’s a sore point … it’s a real issue,” about McPherson’s half-time trick.

While we’re having fun with that, it’s no wonder his coach is upset about it.

However, it did not affect McPherson’s performance. After scoring a 29-yard field goal in the first half, McPherson scored a 38-yard field goal in the second half to give the Bengals a 20-13 lead. McPherson was 2 of 2 in the game to end an incredible playoff run and a season for the rookie kicker.

The Bengals selected McPherson of Florida in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and quickly made a name for themselves as one of the best kickers in the NFL.

McPherson scored 16 field goals during the playoffs, setting a new NFL record. He had winning kicks against the Titans and Chiefs to get to the Super Bowl.

He also set franchise records for most field goals in a single season for the Bengals and most field goals from 50 or more yards with 12.

In Morrison’s play, Simmons said he wants to improve McPherson’s skills on kick-offs.

“We certainly need to improve on the kick-offs, the consistency on the kick-offs,” Simmons told The Athletic. “One of my main things this low season is that I have to get his field goal leg to match what he does in the kickoffs. He has a very, very powerful field leg. It’s not that he doesn’t have a leg. powerful kick-off, but we have to get that power transferred to kick-offs more consistently than we did this year. “
