Baylor defeats West Virginia 76-50 with a big 12 crown

Kansas City, Missouri – Queen Egubo scored 18 points and 11 rebounds, and 6th Baylor defeated West Virginia 76-50 to win the Big 12 tournament on Sunday.

This is the ninth Big 12 Championship in the last 10 tournaments of top-seeded Baylor (25-2).

Dijonai Carrington added 14, and Moon Ursin scored 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Bears won 17 straight wins.

“I’m more thankful this year because I didn’t have a chance last year. I need to make the most of every moment I have to play,” Egbo said. “They consistently need this, and we all feel like we’re starting to peak at the right time.”

In West Virginia, Kirstendeen scored 15 points and Kiss Legong Dregic scored 13 points. West Virginia has been trying to win its second Big 12 tournament in the last four years.

“I couldn’t shoot the ball well and took a lot of bad shots,” said Mike Carey, director of West Virginia University. “Today’s crime was terrible.”

West Virginia (21-6) went from the field to 17 out of 63 (27%) and Baylor was 33 out of 66 (50%).

The Lady Bears outperformed West Virginia 46-33 and dominated with Paint, which scored 54 points in Paint.

“Fatigue has occurred on both teams, and I’m not surprised,” said Baylor coach Kim Marquee. “It happens, but we were able to survive the fatigue.”

The Mountaineers never exceeded 10 in the second half, as Baylor won double-digit wins in 12 of the last 13 games.

“We were deep and it wasn’t surprising that we extended our lead late,” Marquee said of finishing the game with a 12-0 run. “I was absolutely proud because it’s hard to come late. They had fresh legs and attacked during the transition. That’s the way you want to end the game.”

Almost two months have passed since the last defeat of the Lady Bears, which suffered a 75-71 defeat against Iowa on January 16.

“I feel for the four seniors who couldn’t do this last year,” Mulkey said. “Last year there were teams that could have won it all, and I feel for those seniors.

Big picture

West Virginia: They couldn’t really get close by in the second half. Earlier this month, they lost to Baylor by the age of 23, which has improved since the game.

Baylor: The Lady Bears are the gold standard for this conference and prove it every year. The other nine teams in the Big 12 have a lot to do.
