Bane leads the Grizzlies above the Nets while Irving scores 43 points

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Desmond Bane scored 23 points, including nine in a row when Memphis regained its lead in the fourth quarter and the Grizzlies beat Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets 132-120 Wednesday night.

Irving scored 43 points and Kevin Durant had 35 points and 11 rebounds. Still banned from playing at home because of a vaccine warrant in New York City, Irving has been on the court for the first time since scoring 60 points in Orlando eight days earlier.

But that deal for Irving, who is not vaccinated against COVID-19, is coming to an end. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is set to lift the mandate of athletes and artists.

Memphis were given a gift! The ref dubiously awarded them a penalty 27 minutes into the match, which was neatly put away by Ja Morant. But they did get pretty offensive anyway thanks to reserve De’Anthony Melton, who equaled Bane’s 23 points, and Dillon Brooks, who finished with 21. The Grizzlies won six of seven and are second in the Western Conference.

Memphis wasted a double-digit lead in the second half but retired in the fourth quarter, beating Brooklyn 29-16.

The Grizzlies lead 76-62 at halftime and by 15 points early in the third quarter, but Brooklyn relied on Durant and Irving for them to move on. Brooklyn made 16 of 22 shots in the period and led 104-103 entering the fourth.

Nets: They lost five in a row in the series. The Grizzlies are the only team the Nets have not won this season.

Grizzlies: They’re 15-2 without Morant. As for Morant’s condition, Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said: “He’s dealing with some pain that has increased in recent days, just by unloading it.” … The win was the 50th of the Memphis season, the fourth time Memphis has won so many and the first since 2014-15. … Bane made six triples, beating Mike Miller for the most 3s of a Grizzlies player in a season.

Irving turned 30 on Wednesday, but it was his coach who received a gift when news broke that the star could soon play at home.

“I’d love to,” coach Steve Nash said with a laugh.

Nets: in Miami on Saturday.

Grizzlies: Indiana host on Thursday.
