Australia’s 5G deployment is well underway at this stage, with Telstra claiming that it has reached 50% of Australia’s population by January this year, less than two years after it began deployment. I am.
And according to the latest report from internet speed testing firm Ookla, Australian telcos seem to be doing well in this regard.
The report shows that Australia’s 5G network is one of the best networks in the world, with a median download speed of 283.56 Mbps. This is an important number compared to the world average of 142.05 Mbps.
By comparison, the only trading partners that surpassed Australia were South Korea (median about 430 Mbps) and China (a little over 300 Mbps).
Which telephone company’s 5G is the king?
As for individual carriers, Optus and Telstra have been involved in a fierce battle for 5G supremacy, both claiming to be the fastest 5G speeds in the country.
Telstra recently doubled these speed claims, but based on Ookla’s tests, Optus had the fastest median 5G download speed in the first quarter of 2021, compared to Telstra’s 295.00 Mbps. It was 309.86 Mbps.
In the same test, Vodafone weighed 184.98 Mbps. This reflects the resulting lack of network development after the third telco entered the 5G space.
When it comes to uploads, Telstra outperforms Optus with a median of 28.27 Mbps and 21.56 Mbps, respectively, and Vodafone again lags behind at 16.70 Mbps.
Optus may achieve the fastest average speed, but Telstra (according to Ookla’s tests) has arguably the highest 5G availability in the country. This measurement reflects “the percentage of users who spend most of their time on 5G connections.”
Telstra provided its customers with 32.8% of 5G availability in the first quarter of 2021, compared to Optus’s 13.6% and Vodafone’s 3.4%. So, while Optus customers may now be improving their 5G speeds a bit, Telstra customers are more than twice as likely to actually be able to use 5G networks.
