Arraez gets 3 hits when the Twins beat the White Sox 6-3 in 10 innings

CHICAGO – Luis Arraez had three hits, including a drive-down single in the tenth inning of Minnesota’s four runs, and the Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 on Monday night.

Arraez’s first ball to Joe Kelly (0-2) put runner Gilberto Celestino. Jorge Polanco added a sacrifice fly, and Alex Kirilloff made it 6-2 with a two-run single.

Kelly was injured with two consecutive passes in front of Polanco’s pass to the left. Coach Tony La Russa was sent off by plate referee David Rackley when the tenth fell to the White Sox.

“He’s a better referee than today and in an even match like that, he’s a potential to make a difference,” La Russa said. “But when they beat you, they win. You don’t blame the referee. It made it harder for us, but we still had a chance to win.”

Chicago also faced a triple play with an embarrassing display of base runs in the seventh.

AL Central contenders clashed hours after a gunman opened fire at an Independence Day parade in the Chicago suburbs, killing at least six people. The White Sox spoke with Major League Baseball about postponing the game, but it continued as planned.

Announcement

The post-match fireworks show was canceled and a moment of silence was observed before the first release.

The Twins, leaders of the division (46-37), won for the third time in four games. The White Sox (38-40), who played the first of 19 consecutive games against AL Central opponents, had won three in a row. They missed the opportunity to hit the .500 mark for the first time since June 21st.

Emilio Pagán (3-3) got three outs for the win. Jhoan Duran allowed AJ Pollock’s RBI single in the tenth before closing it out, hitting Tim Anderson with runners in the corners on his final throw.

Arraez increased his major league batting average to .348 and extended his batting streak against the White Sox to 13 games. He bats .429 (21 of 49) against the Sox since the streak began on June 5, 2021.

“I bet a lot of baseball people would pick Luis Arraez as the guy to get to a second and the game in play,” Twins coach Rocco Baldelli said.

Announcement

Chicago lost 2-1 before Yoán Moncada hit a single at home to José Abreu in the seventh. With pinch-runner Adam Engel in second and Moncada in first, Pollock hit a deep push to center that Buxton crawled with a catch over his shoulder.

Engel and Moncada ran as Buxton introduced the ball. Gold Glove-winning center fielder quickly pitched third baseman Gio Urshela, who scored Moncada between second and third and went second to complete the Twins ’first triple play since June 6, 2021 in Kansas City.

“This was the weirdest,” Urshela said.

“I had no idea what was going on,” Baldelli said. “I thought we pulled one out. And (Buxton) turned around and shot him. And as soon as he shot it, I saw there was some commotion at the bases. I wasn’t even sure who was where and who was trying to get back and at what base they started.”

Buxton was also deep, hitting a two-run homer against Johnny Cueto in the fifth. Buxton extended his batting streak against the Sox to 10 games, during which he batted, 488 (19 of 37) with eight homers and 15 RBIs.

Announcement

The White Sox had taken a 1-0 lead over Abreu’s home run against Dylan Bundy in the second. It was Abreu’s 10th place in the season.

White Sox shutter Liam Hendriks, who was activated from the 15-day injury list after being sidelined since June 11 due to a strain on his right forearm, hit the sideline in the eighth. Hendricks ’fast ball hit 97 mph.
