Arlington school shooting: 16-year-old victim identified

The family identified the teenage victim as Jashawn Poirier.

Arlington, Texas — A 16-year-old boy shot dead outside high school Details of the incident emerged at the hearing of a 15-year-old suspect in Arlington on Monday.

The family has confirmed to the WFAA that the victim killed at Lamar High School is Jashawn Poirier.

A 15-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, has been arrested and faces capital punishment for murder.

Arlington police on Monday said they began responding to multiple calls about the shooting on campus around 6:55 a.m.

During the suspect’s detention hearing on Tuesday, it was revealed that surveillance video captured the proceedings. The video was also used to identify suspects.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the suspect firing a long gun at students outside the school. Ms. Poirier was fatally shot and a 16-year-old girl was hit by shrapnel.

The girl told police she was sitting on a bench outside the entrance when she was hit. Police said her guardian took the girl to the hospital.

The suspect fled the scene of the shooting, but was later arrested and taken to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center, police said. Officers credited eyewitnesses for helping locate the suspect.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

At Tuesday’s hearing, a judge ruled that the suspect will remain in custody. Another hearing is scheduled for 10 days.

During the hearing, the judge explained to prosecutors that, after reading the indictment, the officers appeared unable to establish a direct connection between the shooting and the arrested 15-year-old boy. It outlined how the affidavit raised questions about exactly how officers concluded that the teenager was directly responsible for the shooting.

The suspect’s attorney issued a statement after the hearing.

Attorney Lisa Herrick said, “I had the chance to see this kid first thing this morning. “He has never been involved in the juvenile justice system and is understandably emotional. This is a truly tragic case, but… Please reserve judgment until all facts and circumstances are clarified.”

“My Heart Just Fell”

The shooting was painful for both parents and students as the reunion took place on Monday.

Lamar High School students were taken to the Arlington Athletic Center and picked up by their parents.

“I was just texting [my granddaughter]we were texting back and forth, so the moment I saw her, I was a little relieved,” said Marti Sanchez as he held his granddaughter in his arms.

“This is the first time I’ve dealt with something like this,” Sanchez added. “You never know now. It can happen in the mall, it can happen in the grocery store, it can happen anywhere.”

Freshman Stephanie Escamilla said she had just started school when the shooting happened. She said she saw someone fall to the ground, but she didn’t think it was serious at first.

“It wasn’t too bad because the principal and the police were covering it, so I kind of passed out,” Escamilla said.
