Apple launches manufacturing of iPhone 13 in India

Acting on their communicated plans to make massive strides in the Indian market, Apple has started manufacturing the iPhone 13 in India. Manufacturing will be under contract with Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

The move is also speculated to be tied to rising unrest in China, as Apple has attempted to unbundle some manufacturing processes from China to other emerging markets like India, Vietnam and Mexico. The Indian government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have also shown promise for the electronics industry.

For some time now, Apple has been insisting on considering India as a more serious market for its phones. India has started to show signs of aggressive growth in terms of the revenue it brings to the Cupertino giant. It recently passed the $1 billion annual sales mark, leading Apple to do the same by adding India to the list of countries where its phones are launching alongside the US and China. .

In a report, Apple was quoted as saying, “We are excited to start manufacturing the iPhone 13 – with its beautiful design, advanced camera systems for stunning photos and video, and the incredible performance of the A15 chip. Bionic – here in India for our local customers.”

Production of iPhones in India began in 2017, when Apple started manufacturing the iPhone SE in India. Currently, Apple manufactures IPhone 11, IPhone 12 under contract with FoxConn. The company is also partnering with manufacturers Wistron and Pegatron, which will manufacture the iPhone 12.

None of the Pro models have been given the green light for local manufacturing, likely due to higher prices and therefore weaker demand in the Indian market dominated by budget smartphones. Another reason could be the materials required for high-end models not available for local supply.

The iPhone 13 comes in three different storage options, these being 128GB priced at INR 79,900, 256GB at INR 89,900, and the highest 512GB at INR 1,09,900. Local manufacture of these phones is expected to save around 20% on import duties. That might not guarantee more phone-friendly pricing, but it’s definitely a possibility. No timetable has been obtained as to when we will see the iPhone 13s made in India.
