On Saturday afternoon, a westbound Empire Builder train with 141 passengers and 16 crew members derailed near Joplin, a town of less than 200 people, just a few miles from the Canadian border. This tragedy occurred when Amtrak concludes its national annual Rail Safety Week.

Liberty County Sheriff dispatcher Star Tyler said he had been injured and confirmed the dead.

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said eight out of ten cars on the train had fallen off the railroad tracks and were sitting beside them off the railroad tracks when the train stopped.
