Amazon is the top company in the US to work to achieve career growth

LinkedIn on Wednesday named Amazon the top U.S. company you can work for if you’re looking for a career. Amazon tops the list for the second year.

The list of LinkedIn’s best companies for 2022 includes seven pillars aimed at career growth: the ability to move forward, skills growth, company stability, external opportunities, company kinship, gender diversity and the spread of educational backgrounds. The company said the ranking is based on data from its 810 million members and the company’s investment in employees.

But CNBC partner JUST Capital, a platform dedicated to measuring and improving corporate performance, found that the e-commerce giant ranks much lower among workers.

JUST ranks Amazon 11th out of 53 in retail and 569th overall among companies JUST tracks Russell 1000. JUST Capital’s rating is determined by a survey of Americans on issues they believe American companies should give the most. For workers, this includes the subsistence level, the health and safety of workers, benefits and work-life balance, diversity, equity and inclusion, and investment in labor and training.

Amazon outperforms the industry average in the JUST rankings in all but one category: Worker Health and Safety, which measures measures to protect the well-being of workers in excess of legal requirements.

JUST also puts Amazon below the industry average for health and safety based on the number of disputes and fewer relevant policies in the company.

This category is especially missing in the assessment included in the LinkedIn list.

Amazon, the country’s second-largest private employer, has met with widespread attention from lawmakers, activists and some of its employees over its seniority.

Warehouse and delivery workers have regularly spoken out against the company, arguing that its “customer obsession” and focus on fast delivery has created a dangerous work environment. They argued that the frantic pace did not allow for sufficient breaks and time in the bathroom, and employees also urged the company to raise wages and offer more paid leave.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the activity of employees has intensified – with organized protests and calls for safety in the workplace. Officials also accused Amazon of retaliating against both white-collar workers and service collars who publicly criticized the company.

Amazon CEO Andy Jesse acknowledged during the GeekWire summit in October that the company could do more to better treat employees. “I think that if you have a large group of people like us – we have 1.2 million employees – it’s almost like a small country,” he said. “There are a lot of things you could do better.”

Amazon employees in Staten Island, New York, voted to join the union, which was perhaps the strongest signal of the company’s activity. The result is a serious upset for the e-commerce giant, which has strongly opposed unions since its founding more than two decades ago.

The union election has once again focused on how Amazon treats its employees. Earlier this month, the House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into Amazon’s work practices, requiring it to pass on information related to last year’s fatal warehouse collapse in Illinois.

Amid rising unrest last year, Amazon promised to work to improve employee welfare. The company has added “Strive to be the best employer on Earth” to the list of leadership principles that underpin its corporate culture.

The company has also added more robust benefits, such as reimbursement of college tuition costs, including books and fees, to its approximately 750,000 hourly staff across the country. He has pledged $ 1.2 billion to help improve the skills of more than 300,000 of his employees by 2025.

Last fall, Amazon raised the average starting salary for U.S. warehouse workers to $ 18 an hour after setting a minimum wage of $ 15 an hour in 2018.
