Federal prosecutors have charged about 20 people in the past two weeks with alleged involvement in various Covid-19 pandemic fraud schemes that amounted to about $ 150 million in improper government payments, officials said.
The allegations come as the Department of Justice intensifies efforts to uncover theft from programs that channeled billions of dollars into the health care system after the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. The new cases are being filed in areas across the country and provide a glimpse of how some Healthcare providers have reportedly tried to defraud Medicare and other programs by grouping charges for unnecessary services — or those that were never provided — by delivering relatively cheap Covid-19 tests.
