Alex Cheska wins Region Tradition playoffs over Stricker

Birmingham, Alabama. – Alex Čejka defeated defending champion Steve Stricker in the birdie on the first hole of the playoffs and won Region Tradition on Sunday at the third PGA Tour Champions start.

50-year-old Cejka, a childhood refugee from the communist Czech Republic (now the Czech Republic), made a 14-foot birdie putt on number 18 and Stricker missed 9 feet with a chance to extend the playoffs at Graystone Golf & Country. The club that did.

Cejka turned a three-stroke deficit into a two-shot lead in the final nine holes of a five-under 67. His winning putt was from a location similar to the Stricker made for birdies to force the playoffs.

The Stricker who won when the event was last held in 2019 ended at 68, comparable to Cejka under 18-270.

Growing up in Germany, Cejka entered the field another Monday when Jay Haas withdrew and left with a full exemption. He started his first two PGA Tour Champions in qualifying on Monday, tying second in the Chub Classic.

Swede Robert Karlsson was third with 14 unders after 69. This is because the last 3Ps in the top three played all day without much threat from the puck. He finished at 69.

Ernie Els (66) and Jerry Kelly (70) finished 11 under. Two-time champion Bernhard Lange finished 71 and finished 9 under with David McKenzie.

Cejka rebounded from three strokes in the last nine holes. His only bogey came to the first hole of the day.

Stricker made an approximately 13-foot birdie putt on the last hole to force the playoffs when Sedica put two pars after a bad bunker shot.

Cejka ran three straight birdies from 12-14 to build a two-stroke advantage towards the final five holes. Stricker’s 16th long birdie putt was cut in half before both pared 17.

Stricker held the clutch at number 18 throughout the weekend.

He made a birdie on Friday and moved to Reed’s share and vaulted to Reed Solo on Saturday with a 25-foot eagle putt.

Stricker had both past times at the PGA Tour Champions when he hosted the 54-hole lead, region tradition and US Senior Open Championship in 2019.
