A tsunami struck Tonga, warning people to get out of the water to Fiji, a huge wave crashing into the house, and volcanic ash pouring onto the inhabitants, fleeing horrified locals to high ground.

A “violent” underwater volcanic eruption at 5:10 pm local time on Saturday was identified as the cause of the tsunami, overwhelming Tonga’s homes, buildings, fences, roads and cars about 20 minutes later. ..

Locals begged people to “pray for us” as the eruption was compared to a “bomb explosion” and the tsunami landed.

The eruption was heard thousands of kilometers away and warnings were issued in New Zealand, Fiji and American Samoa.

Fearful locals fled to high ground as the tsunami struck Tonga and huge waves hit roads and homes.

Dramatic footage showed huge waves landing on the populous islands of the Tonga Islands hours after the eruption.

The Tonga Meteorological Bureau issued a tsunami warning on the main island of Tongatapu on Saturday evening while sirens were ringing in the capital Nuku’alofa.

There was also a report that volcanic ash had fallen on Nuku’alofa.

A local woman, Mere Taufa, was preparing dinner for her family when the biggest eruption struck her home.

“It was huge, the ground was shaking, our house was shaking. It came on the waves, my brother thought the bomb was exploding nearby,” Taufa said. I told co.nz.

She said she saw the house soon filled with water and the walls of her neighbor’s house collapsed.

“I heard screams everywhere, people screamed for safety, and everyone was able to reach higher places.”

An emergency alert in Tonga ordered the locals to urgently move to higher ground.

Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on Friday, sending debris, ash and gas 20 kilometers into the air.

But Saturday’s turmoil came from the second, much larger eruption.

Located about 30km southeast of Tonga’s Fonuafoo Island, it has erupted several times in the last few weeks.

The eruption also provided tsunami warnings to Fiji and American Samoa, 804 and 936 kilometers from Tonga.

In Fiji, the Department of Mineral Resources warned people to “keep away from water and beaches.”

One man wrote on social media: “We live in Koromotua near the sea, so we have already left.

“Pray for us for family and safety.”

The American Stormwatcher Group has rapidly spread the footage online, calling it “one of the most violent volcanic eruptions ever captured by satellite.”
