A VIA employee was injured in a fight with a driver who refused to stop near the city center, police said

SAN ANTONIO – A police officer of VIA Transit was injured in a fight with a driver who refused to stop, according to the police.

At around 2:15 a.m. Thursday, an employee spotted a BMW passing a stop sign without stopping on East Crockett and Chestnut streets, just east of downtown, according to VIA police.

The officer tried to pull the driver, but the car continued and then stopped in the garage of the Baldwin apartments.

The BMW went to the fourth floor and the policeman followed the car. At one point, the driver and the policeman got into a fight, police said.

The officer called the radio for help and VIA and San Antonio police responded to the scene. The suspect, who was not identified, was eventually arrested.

He has been charged with fleeing and resisting arrest and drunk driving.

Another person in the BMW fled the area and was not detained.

Police said the VIA officer may have broken his thumb and been taken to a nearby hospital.
