A Washington school bus driver was killed after a man boarded the bus on Friday and stabbed him in front of an elementary school student, police said.

Richard Renhart, 72, from Kennewick, was taken to a local hospital but was injured and died.

Renhart was picking up young children at Pasco’s Long Fellow Elementary School when the suspect boarded the bus and attacked him with a knife.

The bus was moving at the time of the attack, and Renhart lost control and jumped over the curb before the bus collided with the hedge.

According to police, no one harmed the children in the crash.

The suspect, who has not yet been nominated by police, waited on the scene and was arrested without incident, officials said.

Students on or near the bus were returned to the school grounds and their parents were called in to pick them up.

The bus was investigated by investigators on Friday, and police said an official statement about the crime would follow on Monday.

Captain Bill Paramore of the Pasco Police Department said his department would work closely with the Pasco School District in the investigation.
