A-Rod’s nephew, Dunand HR, debuted; Marlins skids final, SD up

SAN DIEGO – Alex Dunand, Alex Rodriguez’s nephew, hit a home run in the third inning he saw as a major league player and then doubled as the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 on Saturday night to end a series of six consecutive defeats.

Jorge Soler hit his first grand slam of his career and Pablo Lopez pitched eight strong innings for Miami.

Dunand hit a 1-1 shot from left-hander Sean Manaea in the front row in the center left with an out in the third just hours after his contract was selected by Triple-A Jacksonville.

“I think I’m gone. I don’t remember much,” Dunand said. “I just remember my game plan. I was looking for the ball up and I hit it hard in the middle, and I think I got it back running second. It was a great feeling.”

A-Rod tweeted, “WOW! MLB’s first batting game. Come on Joe !!!” The tweet was accompanied by a video of adults wildly partying.

“I didn’t look at my phone. I’m sure it’s exploding,” Dunand said. “But I’m sure I’ll see him. I’m sure he’s crazy.”

Dunand has 695 home runs behind his uncle, who is fourth on the all-time list after a steroid-contaminated run.

Dunand did not receive the silent treatment in the dugout after the home run, but was overwhelmed at a wild club celebration. He also received the ball from the boy who caught it, who asked to meet the second baseman of the Marlins Jazz Chisholm Jr.

“The boy wanted to meet Jazz and Jazz said to me, ‘I have you,’ so he went to meet him and put the ball on me. So, thank you, Jazz,” Dunand said.

Dunand was promoted from the Triple-A Jacksonville after Jon Berti was placed on the injured list. Dunand had been in the taxi group for this trip through San Diego and Arizona. He started in third base and hit ninth.

Dunand, 26, doubled to the left in his second inning at bat and scored Garrett Cooper’s two-run double.

“I think he’s looking for his uncle,” Cooper said. “That’s a great first AB. Good for him. That’s a memory he’ll always have, of a good All-Star pitcher. Getting a double later, that’s huge for him and it’s a great start for us to get that first race and take the lead early. I can’t say enough about the work he did in his first game. “

Cooper struck out at the start of the eighth and was sent off by plate referee DJ Reyburn.

Soler’s grand slam highlighted the ninth of five races against the San Diego bullpen. It was his fourth home run this season. Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a double drive.

Lopez (4-1) closed out the Padres on five hits as he put up five and walked two. It has an effectiveness of 1.00 after six outings.

The Padres have been ruled out for the first time this season.

Manny Machado made a single in the Padres to extend his base streak to 17 games.

Manaea (2-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings, struck out eight and took a walk.

Machado’s .382 average and .458 base percentage are the best in baseball and his teammate Eric Hosmer’s .371 average and .451 OBP are second. This is the first time that two teammates have qualified first and second in both categories after a team has played at least 27 games in a season since Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers led in both categories until May 23, 1951, which was 34. games that season.

San Diegan Chris Olave has released the first ceremonial release. Ohio State wide receiver was the New Orleans Saints’ 11th overall pick in last week’s NFL Draft.

Marlins: He placed INF / OF Berti on the injured list and chose Dunand’s contract.

Parents: RF Matt Beaty left the game after making an attempt to dive into Miguel Rojas’ double in the second. … He placed LHP Tim Hill in the 10-day IL, retroactive to Thursday, with swollen left shoulder, and removed LHP Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso.

LHP Marlins Trevor Rogers (1-4, 6.14) is scheduled to start the series finale on Sunday against RHP Padres Joe Musgrove (4-0, 1.97).
