A Proud Boys documentary will be among the first witnesses on January 6

WASHINGTON – A documentary filmmaker who recorded members of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys while storming the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, says he will testify during the first hearing of the House of Representatives committee investigating the uprising.

Nick Questid, a British director who also witnessed some of the group’s plans before the attack on the Capitol, confirmed to the Associated Press that he will be among the witnesses at the prime time hearing on Thursday night. The panel has not yet announced a complete list of those who will testify.

He was questioned about some of the most unusual events of the day, accompanying members of the extremist group as they walked to the Capitol from President Donald Trump’s speech to the White House, breaking police barriers and eventually the building and hundreds of supporters. of Trump were moving through the Capitol to protest his defeat.

He was also questioned by the man who led the group at the time, Henry Enrique Tario, the night before Tario met in an underground garage in Washington with Elmer Stewart Rhodes, founder and leader of The Bare Guardians, another extremist group present. in revolt.

Tario and other members of the group were accused Monday of rebellious conspiracy over what federal prosecutors say was a coordinated attack on the Capitol to prevent Congress from attesting to President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Rhodes was accused of similar charges earlier this year.

Quested says he was interviewed by the Justice Department as it prosecuted hundreds of uprising cases. He says he shot the group as part of a documentary on extremism in America.

Quested is expected to describe his experiences and possibly what he witnessed behind closed doors, as the commission begins a month of hearings on January 6 to explain to the American public what happened that day and how it happened. The committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews since last summer as it sought to create the most comprehensive document on the uprising to date.

Thursday’s hearing is expected to review the commission’s findings, with other hearings in the coming weeks looking at more details on the planning behind the attack. The panel focused specifically not only on the extremist groups that were among the rebels, but also on what Trump was doing in the White House as the violence unfolded.

Federal authorities have linked more than three dozen people accused of the Capitol siege to the Proud Boys. Its members describe it as a politically incorrect men’s club for “Western chauvinists”.

Quested’s intention to testify was first reported by The New York Times.
