Hallsville, Texas — A child in eastern Texas died after a hunting accident was reported on Saturday evening.
At around 5:15 pm, an agent answered a 911 call about a hunting accident involving an 11-year-old girl, according to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.
Further calls revealed that a man accidentally shot his 11-year-old daughter in hunting debt with a powerful rifle near Young Road and Hicky Road in Hallsville, according to HCSO.
When officials arrived at the scene, they found a child with a life-threatening injury. An EMS care flight was requested, but due to bad weather, all emergency helicopters landed in the area.
The child was then taken to Longview Hospital, where he died.
HCSO investigators and crime scene investigators have responded with Game Warden of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service (TPWD) to complete a thorough investigation into this issue.
Since the incident is a hunting episode, HCSO and TPWD will jointly complete this investigation.
The victim’s name (depending on age) will not be disclosed until the entire family is notified.
“Whenever a young man dies, it’s tragic to everyone involved,” Harrison County Sheriff BJ Fletcher said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are directed to family and friends during this difficult time.”
