A homeowner who lost everything in the Balch Springs fire shares a message

“I’m 57 years old,” said Balch Springs resident Robert Pinero. “It’s hard. I’m not young anymore. I don’t have the strength to start all over again.”

BALCH SPRINGS, Texas – Nearly every home destroyed in Monday’s Balch Springs fire is now empty.

Displaced families took what they could and moved in with friends or relatives while they determined their next steps.

But on Saturday, Robert Pinero returned home. Not because his house or any of his belongings could be saved, but because something that survived the fire cost him money he didn’t have.

“I have to give it back, they’re charging me the $250,” Pinero told WFAA, pointing to his modem. “I said I don’t have money, they said we will put it in your collections.”

Pinero wanted to show us his home so we could show our viewers how quickly a fire can spread and how much damage it can leave behind.

“I’m 57 years old. It’s hard. I’m not young anymore. I don’t have the strength to start all over again.”

And Pinero needs all the power he can get.

Her 7-year-old dog, Torretto, did not survive the fire.

“We’re still crying,” she said. “Believe it or not, we did more damage than the house because of the dog.”

“We did the roof last week,” Pinero said. “New roof. “$17,000.”

As Pinero shared his story with WFAA, crews were putting out hot spots from a fire that burned 350 acres Friday in Glenn Heights, 23 miles away. No houses were lost.

Pinero said each fire encourages him to tell people to cut their lawns and take burn bans seriously.

“It could happen,” he said. “It happened to me. It can happen to someone else.”

Pinero is a religious man. He credits God for keeping all his neighbors safe when their houses burned down, and he trusts that God will help him no matter what happens next.

“In the name of Jesus, everything will be alright.”

Pinero’s son created a GoFundMe to raise money for a new dog.
