68-year-old Chinese man shot dead in California church over “political tensions between China and Taiwan”

David Chou, 68, is accused of shooting at a Taiwanese congregation in Laguna Woods, California on Sunday.

Police say a Chinese man accused of killing and wounding five others in the California church on Sunday has sparked “political tensions between China and Taiwan.”

David Chou, 68, is accused of shooting a Taiwanese congregation that was gathering at a church in Laguna Woods, 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

John Cheng, a 52-year-old doctor, was killed. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Among the five injured were four men, aged 66 to 92, and an 86-year-old woman.

Four of the victims remain in critical condition.

Chou, from Las Vegas, has been charged with one felony count of murder and five counts of attempted murder and is on bail of $ 1 million.

At a press conference on Monday evening, deputies announced that the gunman was driven by the ethnicity of his victims.

Taiwan is a sovereign island nation, about 100 miles off the coast of China. The small country is still claimed by China, even though it has representation in the United Nations and is recognized by 13 countries and the Vatican as independent.

Chou tried to supercool the locks in order to keep them all inside the massacre, deputies say.

A shepherd hit him with a chair shortly after Chou started shooting in the head. The elderly members, who say they have never seen him, were stripped of their weapons and tied to an electric cable until police appeared.

He is accused of committing a horrific attack on the Chou Presbyterian Church in Geneva.

A horrific attack took place one day after a white supremacist killed 10 people at a New York State store.

The gunsmith is not believed to live nearby. Public records show that he has been associated with dozens of different addresses since the late 1980s, indicating the possibility of being an investor property, the Orange County Register reported.

Deputies now say the Chinese gunman was prompted by an “individual complaint” against Taiwan, and recently complained that China’s military presence has increased in its airspace.

About 40 parishioners witnessed the violence on Sunday, but those in attendance also helped prevent further bloodshed by subduing and tying up the shooter.

The shooting took place around 1:25 p.m. at a luncheon in honor of former pastor Billy Chang, who has served the church for 20 years and has been a beloved and respected member of the community.

Chang returned to Taiwan two years ago. It was the first time he had returned to the state.

Former congregation Jerry Chen, 72, had just entered the kitchen of the church fellowship hall when he heard gunshots and saw church members shouting, running, and crouching under the table.

“I knew someone was shooting,” he said. “I was very, very scared. I ran out the kitchen door to call 911. ‘

Chen, who called the church car park for emergency services, said he was in such a state of shock that he could not tell the operator his location. “I had to ask someone else for an address,” he said.

Everyone had just had lunch: a special box of bento with teriyaki chicken.

Chen said, “They were taking pictures with Shepherd Chang. I had just finished my lunch and went into the kitchen.”

Shortly afterwards, Chen said he had heard details of what had happened inside from others who came out. Members of the congregation told him that when the gunman stopped reloading, he was hit in the head by a shepherd Chang with a chair, while others moved quickly to pick up the gun. Then they dominated and bound him.

“It was amazing (Chang) and how brave the others were,” he said. ‘This is very sad. I never thought anything like this would happen in my church, in my community. ”

Most members of the church are elderly and highly educated Taiwanese immigrants, Chen said. “Most of us are retired and the average age of our church is 80.”

While the shooter was firing, the shooter tried to close the doors, deputies said on Monday, trying to prevent people from fleeing when he fired.

Among those shot were four Asian men aged 66, 75, 82 and 92 and an 86-year-old Asian woman, the sheriff’s department said.

Two of the victims are married couples. Four are in serious condition.

Authorities say those involved “showed extraordinary heroism and courage in the arrest of the suspect.”

“We believe that this group of churchgoers showed extraordinary heroism and courage in intervening to stop the suspect. They certainly avoided more injuries and deaths, “said Jeff Hallock, Orange County Undersheriff.

“I think it’s safe to say that if people didn’t get involved, it could have been a lot worse.”

They found two guns on the shooter and quickly removed them.

Two of the victims were taken to Providence Mission Hospital, the medical center confirmed.

Another victim was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, and two others were taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, including a 92-year-old man who was shot by a bullet.

Most of those inside the church were believed to be of Taiwanese origin and gathered in honor of a former pastor of the church with a reception after lunch on Sunday morning.

Deputies say gunman David Chou was prompted by an “individual complaint” against the Taiwanese people. Investigators say they do not believe the gunman lives in the community.

The town of about 18,000 is made up of Laguna Woods Village, a large retirement community for people over the age of 55, formerly known as Leisure World. More than 80 percent of the city’s population is at least 65 years old, according to demographics.

Cynthia Conners, the mayor of Laguna Woods, said Sunday that she is a member of the church and went to church that morning. A Taiwanese group usually uses the church later in the morning.

“I couldn’t have even imagined that something like this could happen here,” church organist Charlotte Hseih told the New York Times in an interview. “I’m just as impressed as anyone.”
