When you’re looking for the next big player, whether that’s for bragging rights or making a solid wager, you need to identify players that are being overlooked. The spotlight can’t cover everybody, so some players will inevitably become underrated. An underrated player isn’t just an attractive underdog for fans, they’re also popular with the betting crowd.
If you can find those players and back them at a betting spot, you can make some cash when they put in a good performance. Needless to say, you should know something about betting on the NFL when the next season rolls in. That way, you can capitalize on the information you’re learning in this guide to impress or even make some money.
Chris Carson is a running back for the Seattle Seahawks. In fantasy football circles, he’s consistently ranked at #20 in favorability because he hasn’t finished a season yet. While we get it, you should never hold a lack of experience against a promising player. He’s reliable and has covered 681 yards alongside five TDs with 287 receiving yards and 4 TDs.
If given the chance to perform, Carson may be able to put in a performance that lands him on the map. In that case, the risk of backing him would be well worth its reward. He only recently scored a 30-yard touchdown that has gotten the attention of sports media, so get in on the Chris Carson action before it’s too late!
Allen Lazard is a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers. When you’re in a team with Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers, it’s impossible to not get overshadowed by the media apparatus surrounding football. This is common with many underrated players in the NFL, where they field with other great players and personalities that steal the limelight and divert media coverage away from the lesser-known members of the team.
While unfortunate for some players, it can be beneficial to you if you find those underrated players and back them. Across two prior seasons, Lazard has racked up over 450 receiving yards and recently scored a TD against the LA Rams. Given recent performances, it’s likely that Lazard is going to get more attention from NFL media as he continues pass-catching in good form.
Wyatt Teller of the Cleveland Browns is one of the team’s offensive guards and seems to contribute to their average yards per play. When Teller wasn’t around, the Browns averaged out at 5.54 yards per play while achieving 6.15 yards per play when Teller was fielded. He was considered second-best at creating and maintaining space as an offensive lineman when compared to other guards of the season.
Assuming those kinds of performances continue, you can rely on Teller as an underrated NFL player to bet on when the Browns next take to the field. Like with the Packers, the Browns are another big team that gets a lot of coverage, mainly directed at their QB and other players, so Teller can easily slide under the radars of fans and sportsbooks alike.
Zach Cunningham is a linebacker for the Houston Texans’ 2021 roster. While he isn’t being overshadowed by other NFL stars or misdirected media coverage, his tackling performance seems sorely underappreciated. He’s improved year-over-year since starting in 2017, launching into a four-year performance streak that is only getting better. Whether his fifth year will continue the trend is yet to be seen.
Across those four years, he hit 90, 107, 142, and then 164 combined tackles. Now, tackles alone don’t determine whether a player is a great player, and every player has shortcomings, so check out who the Texans are playing. Cunningham is drawn to the ball when others are carrying it but he’s otherwise standard in his other performance stats, so he’s certainly underrated in certain contexts.
Courtland Sutton is another wide receiver, this time for the Denver Broncos. He may be underrated because he missed most of the 2020 season due to a torn ACL. His last played season was where he established a +17.1 catch rate with 427 yards. During that play period, he forced 16 missed tackles.
If he can make a good return to form in the next season, Sutton can hopefully swing a good performance and prove that he’s been underrated. That can be an earning opportunity if you can place some bets on him making that return.
