3 goals in 5 minutes of recovery wins the Premier League for City

MANCHESTER – Manchester City have been here before, losing at home and risking taking the title.

Would leaders choke like never before in the Premier League?

The prospect of a change of leadership for the first time on the final day was growing with Villa leading 2-0 at the stunning Etihad Stadium as rivals Liverpool chased victory over Wolverhampton.

Just like when in 2012 a comeback was made to win their first Premier League title with two goals in stoppage time, City produced another exciting recovery.

This time he needed three goals, all scored in five minutes from the 76th minute, to turn Villa around to win 3-2 and successfully defend the title by a single point.

Even when City were losing, Liverpool were still in second place because they only drew 1-1 with the Wolves at Anfield.

But the importance of lkay Gündoğan’s second goal in the 81st minute increased moments later when Mohamed Salah sent Liverpool ahead against the Wolves before Andy Robertson sealed the 3-1 victory for Liverpool.

“Today we are back from the dead and we won the game,” said captain Fernandinho after his last game with City. “It’s an incredible feeling.”

Relief, followed by pure happiness.

No wonder thousands of City fans flooded the field in the final whistle, defying new orders against field invasions. Soon the stadium was covered in blue smoke.

Once the pitch is cleared, the Premier League trophy could be handed to City for the sixth time in 11 seasons.

Liverpool, the only team to interrupt City’s series of titles since 2018 with their 2020 success, had to settle for second place. Jürgen Klopp’s FA Cup and League Cup winners are, however, still on track for a treble with the Champions League final against Real Madrid on Saturday.

Tottenham return to the Champions League next season after a two-season absence thanks to a 5-0 defeat by the last Norwich, who finished fourth.

There will be no return for Arsenal to the top European football competition after five seasons out after a collapse that was corrected by completing the season by beating Everton 5-1 to finish fifth.

Manchester United will join Arsenal in the Europa League with new coach Erik ten Hag despite losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. West Ham missed the opportunity to displace United from sixth place after losing 3-1 at Brighton, so this season’s Europa League semi-finalists will fall in the Europa Conference League.

Burnley leave the Premier League after six seasons after a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. Leeds ended their recovery with US coach Jesse Marsch beating Brentford 2-1 to prevent relegation.
