15 killed in shooting at Uwalde primary school, active shooter killed, officials say

Uwalde, Texas “An armed man opened fire at a primary school in Uwalde on Tuesday, killing 14 students and a teacher,” said Governor Greg Abbott. An armed man identified as Salvador Romas was also killed, Abbott said. Romas was reportedly a student at Uwalde High School or a former student, Abbott said.

Abbott said Romas shot his grandmother before shooting at Rob’s primary school.

Two law enforcement officers were shot dead, but are expected to be well, Abbott said.

University health officials said a 10-year-old girl and a 66-year-old woman were being treated at the university hospital and were in critical condition.

“Texans across the state mourn the victims of this senseless crime and the Uwalde community,” Abbott said. “Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and call on all Texans to come together to show our unwavering support for all who are suffering. Thanks to the brave first responders who worked to finally provide Rob Elementary School. I instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this crime. The Texas Emergency Management Department is tasked with providing local staff with all the resources needed to respond to this tragedy, as the state of Texas is working to ensure the community has what it needs to heal.

A press conference on what police know about the Hill Country shooting, about 85 miles west of San Antonio, is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Hospital officials also said several students were being treated in the emergency department. The closest members of the family of the injured students were asked to appear in the canteen of the hospital on the second floor. UMH staff will be in constant contact with these family members. Hospital staff are asking residents who are not immediate family members to stay away from the hospital.

The students were evacuated to the Willie DeLeon Civic Center and parents now have the right to take their children there.

There is still a large law enforcement presence at the school and residents are being asked to stay away from campus. The rest of the area is protected, authorities said.

The San Antonio Police Department has sent resources to the school and is ready to help if needed, said Police Chief William McManus.
