15 giant snails that can cause a rare form of meningitis in humans seized at Houston Airport

A quarter pound of beef, fresh leaves, 15 live giant snails — this is not a recipe, but confiscated the contents of airline passenger luggage earlier this month. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced its findings on Tuesday, stating that snails can cause a rare form of meningitis in humans.

The CBP said in a statement that the snail was recovered at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. Passengers who brought in giant snails, also known as banana rasp snails, were traveling from Nigeria. She initially only declared that she had brought dried beef, but later added snails to the declaration, CBP said.

Agricultural experts inspecting passengers’ luggage in Houston found three zip-locked plastic bags containing live snails with fresh leaves and about 0.25 pounds of beef, CBP said.

“Our agricultural experts threaten US crop production and the livestock industry, and foreign flora and fauna that can infect humans,” said Sean Pauly, director of ports at Houston CBP, in a statement. We remain vigilant in protecting the United States from illness. “

USDA manages snails and states on its website that it is “one of the most damaging snails in the world.” According to USDA, it’s about 8 inches long and 5 inches in diameter, about the size of an adult fist.

Giant snails pose a “potentially serious threat” to humans and the environment, CBP said. In addition to adversely affecting agriculture and ecosystems, indigenous peoples of West Africa are known to carry a parasite called rat paragonimiasis that can cause a rare form of meningitis in humans.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2,800 cases have been reported from 30 countries. According to the CDC, parasites do not survive long in the human body and rarely have serious complications such as neurological dysfunction and death.
