A 132-person China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 sank in a flight and crashed into a mountainous area in southern China on Monday, according to authorities and flight tracking data.

Flight MU5735 left Kunming at 13:11 local time (01:11 ET) and was due to arrive in Guangzhou in less than two hours in the southeast of the country, according to FlightRadar24.

The plane took off at 29,100 feet and at 2:20 p.m. It fell more than 25,000 feet in two minutes.

“This kind of tragedy is very unusual,” said Richard Aboulafia, managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory, about the sudden and significant downfall of the plane.

The Chinese Civil Aviation Administration said it was sending a team to the crash site in Guangxi region. Investigators will work to recover the cabinet’s voice recordings and so-called black boxes with flight data. It is also possible to look at pre-flight flights, maintenance history, weather data and pilot health.

Chinese state media have said the accident caused a fire in the mountains. The video circulating on social media showed fire and smoke in the mountains and part of a plane near a dirt road. Chinese officials have not yet confirmed the deaths of the passengers.

A total of 123 passengers and nine crew members are said to be dead, making it the deadliest plane crash in China since 1994 and the worst ever for China Eastern Airlines, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.

It is a Boeing model released before the 737NG or Next Generation Max. It has one of the best safety records of any aircraft that has had 11 fatal crashes in more than 7,000 NG aircraft delivered to customers since 1997, according to Cirium aircraft data and consulting firm.

The 737-800 crashed in China in an accident on Monday for the first time in June 2015. It was not a Boeing 737 Max, a plane that landed worldwide after two accidents in 2018 and 2019.

China Eastern Airlines has confirmed the accident and the number of people on board on Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, in a statement. The airline said workers are being sent to the scene of the accident and has opened a phone number for family members.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it was aware of the accident and would assist in the investigation “upon request.”

Usually when an accident occurs, the country where the accident occurs leads the investigation. Because Flight 5735 was a U.S.-made plane, the National Transportation Safety Board has appointed an accident investigator.

The NTSB did not say whether the investigators would travel to China.

The Boeing manufacturer and its regulator, the FAA, are likely to help with the investigation.

“We have been in close contact with our customers and regulatory authorities since the accident, and we have provided the full support of our technical experts to the investigation conducted by the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration,” Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun wrote to staff. “I will keep you informed about the accident as far as research protocols allow. In the meantime, we will do our best to help our client and the accident at this difficult time, guided by our commitment to safety, transparency and integrity at every step.”

China Eastern, according to the OAG, China’s second-largest carrier, changed the colors of its website and social media accounts to black and white as a sign of mourning.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was “surprised” to learn of the incident, according to state-run CCTV media. He ordered the Shanghai-based China Eastern to organize search and rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the accident.

The last crash of a Chinese passenger airline in 2010 killed 42 people on a Henan Airlines Embraer E-190 flight, according to the ASN database.

There are more than 4,200 737-800 in service worldwide, and 1,177 in Chinese airline fleets — the largest in any country — according to Cirium.

Boeing has been trying to regain its popularity after Max’s two accidents. The Boeing 737 Max landed worldwide in March 2019, the second of two crashes in five months.

Flight Lion Air 610 in Indonesia crashed on October 29, 2018 and Flight Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed on March 10, 2019. All 346 people on both flights were killed in the crash.

China was the first country to land on Max after the second accident. The U.S. and most other countries allowed aircraft to return to service more than a year ago. Chinese regulators re-launched Max in December with changes, but the planes have not yet returned to service.

Shares of Boeing were down about 3.5% on Monday. Spirit AeroSystems, which makes 737 fuselages, also sold 3.5%.

Boeing is preparing to resume shipments of the best-selling Max aircraft to China, a crucial milestone as airlines pay for the delivery of most of the price of an aircraft.

“If Boeing is unable to deliver 737s to China, it will be much more difficult to reduce the company’s 737 inventory, and it will likely be more difficult to increase production. [31 planes per month] is scheduled for this year, “JP Morgan Boeing analyst Seth Seifman wrote in a statement on Monday.

Boeing reported its third consecutive loss in the year in January, raising $ 5.5 billion in costs related to manufacturing defects, forcing it to suspend the company. 787 Dreamliner shipments for most of the last 17 months.
